Recent projects (2006 - ongoing) implemented by VMAS comprise:

Green Isle Foods, Longford and Naas – Freezer Optimisation and Heat Recovery in 2 Production Plants
The project comprise assessment of saving opportunities by improved plant operations as well as via recovery of heat for cleaning purposes at Green Isle Foods production facilities in Longford and Naas. As an integrated part of the project, the present use of spiral freezers are discussed and extra production capacity is considered. Client: Green Isle Foods, 2009 – ongoing.

Sun Chemical – New Agreement according to DS2403
Our assistance to Sun Chemical near Copenhagen have comprised several activities:

  • Energy Efficient Design of 2 new production facilities
  • Organisation of future energy saving activities
  • Training of operators and technical staff within energy saving
  • Workshop on energy efficient design

Activities are also combined into a new DS2403-agreement with The Danish Energy Agency. The work is anchored within the 6 Sigma-organisation in order to secure a maximum focus on energy savings in production areas and process unit operations.

Fredensborg Forsyning – Energy Efficient Design of New Main Office
The Municipality of Fredensborg is planning a new main office for utility operations and we are responsible for preparation of the project so as energy requirements of the new building will be an absolute minimum. A part of the project comprise a close co-operation with architects so as building design and structures from the very beginning are prepared in order to minimize energy requirements.

PMG Ireland – Energy Efficient Design (EED) of New Distillery
The project comprises energy efficient design (EED) of a new large distillery at St. Croix. The project comprises mapping of energy consumption data, analysis of basic energy requirements/energy needs and assessment of energy efficient solutions and Best Available Technology in the new facility together with staff from PMG Ireland (project manager for design project). All saving opportunities are addressed in the basic design phase and implemented during detailed design of the new process plants, utility systems and etc.

Project Zero – Carbon Neutral Industrial Operations in 2029.
We assist the Municipality of Sønderborg and Project Zero in assessment by which measures and with which investments the industrial sector in Sønderborg can be carbon neutral in 2029. The project comprises:

  • definition of baseline
  • assessment of future development in carbon emissions
  • identification of carbon saving initiatives
  • workshops and meeting for industrial participants
  • assessment of related benefits from carbon initiatives (competitiveness, labour etc.)

Technical focus areas comprise use of biomass in energy supply, identification of potential of new production technologies, energy management schemes for small enterprises, integrated approaches to carbon neutrality (LEAN/6 Sigma/EED etc.). Client: Project Zero, 2009 – ongoing.

Agroferm – Optimisation of Fermentation Recipe
Agroferm operates to large fermentation tanks (456 m3 each) for production of Lysine and we have assisted in assessment whether parameters in production recipe can be optimized in terms og energy usage. Especially agitator speed and aeration percentage is questioned. Client: Agroferm, 2008.

Palsgaard – Fuel Switch on 4 Industrial Boilers
Palsgaard is a major producer of emulgators for the food industry and operate complex and energy intensive production processes at the facility in Juelsminde. We have assisted in screening of energy saving opportunities in the plant and identified conversion of 4 oil-fired boilers into natural gas as a major energy saving project. The project comprised assessment of saving potentials by fuel switch, tendering of conversion project, initial contract negotiations on natural gas and ad-hoc assistance during implementation of the project. Further, the energy saving has been “sold” according to the Danish “White Certificate Scheme”.

Data Centres – Ongoing Assistance to Governments, Energy Organisations etc.
VMAS is the main consultant on servers, storage and data centres for the Danish Energy Agency, the Danish Electricity Saving Trust and the EU Commission’s Energy Star programme. The work focuses on establishment of energy efficient requirements to servers, storage and data centres, best efficiency practices, benchmarking of data centres and communication to end users of guidelines and advices. In this connection, VMAS is in close contact with energy authorities, industry organisations such as the US Information Technology Industry Council and the Green Grid, and the industry.

Ongoing consultancy references include:

  • Technical consultancy for the European Commission on ENERGY STAR for IT and office equipment, where VMAS gives technical support in connection to establishment and revision of the qualifying specifications for the ENERGY STAR label including for servers and storage. The support includes technical analyses, consultation and negotiation with the US EPA and the industry, for calculation of energy saving potentials and quality check of registered products. The work started in end of 2005 and is ongoing.
  • Technical consultancy for Danish Energy Agency and representation of the agency in the EU Code of Conduct work for efficient data centres. As part of the work, VMAS is chairman of Energy Efficiency Metrics and Measurements Working Group with the aim of developing a method to measure the electricity consumption and energy efficiency of data centres and server rooms. See further.

VMAS is the main technical consultant for the Danish Electricity Saving Trust on servers and data centres. The work includes data centre benchmarking, production of guidelines for the data centre operators (print and web) and ad hoc consultancy.

Novozymes – Large Scale Heat Pump for District Heating
The project have identified significant amounts of waste heat recovery at Novozymes’s production facility in central Copenhagen and a number of opportunities for utilization of this waste heat has been studied comprising traditional heat pumps in various configurations as well as use of a CO2-based, trans-critical heat pump for delivery of district heating at 90C. The trans-critical heat pump has been selected for detailed technical and financial studies and are expected to be installed during late 2008.

Energy Audits and LEAN – A conceptual study
Through case studies at Novozymes the benefits of combining LEAN way of thinking with Energy Audits have been assessed, clearly leading towards new methodologies for energy savings in industrial plants. The project enlightened the lack of energy awareness in LEAN organizations and where Energy Audit tools – such as energy mapping, PINCH and BAT – can aid in the identification and implementation of energy savings in core industrial processes.

Danish Malting Group – Energy Saving Opportunities in Malting Plant
Key staff at Viegand & Maagøe have assisted Danish Malting Group in major energy saving projects since 1998 and continued projects are now initiated in order to optimize production process, improvement of boiler efficiency etc.

DONG Energy – Identification of CDM-Projects and partnerships in Latin America
We have during a number of visits to Mexico and Latin America identified opportunities for development of cost-attractive CDM-projects and partnerships to be formed to secure DONG Energy a long-term position in this region. Client: DONG Energy, 2008 - ongoing.

NNE Pharmaplan – Ad-hoc Assistance Industrial Design Projects
We have during the past 3 years assisted NNE Pharmaplan in a significant number of design projects within pharmaceutical industry, food processing plants etc. The assistance comprise EHS- screenings, energy efficient design (EED), energy screenings, HVAC-optimisation and building simulation using software tools B-Sim and BE-06 according the Danish building legislation.

JI in Russia – Project Identification in Cement Industries
We assist FL Smidth and the Danish Ministry of Energy and Climate in identification of JI-project in two large cement plants. The project comprise assessment of carbon saving potentials, identification of suitable JI (CDM)-methodologies, preparation of PIN-notes and PDD-documents, assessment of monitoring principles etc.

CDM I Pakistan og Malaysia – Project Identification in Cement Industries

Københavns Energi – Heat Recovery from Compressed Air Plants
According to the Danish “White Certificate”-scheme, heat recovery in a number of new compressed air plants planned by Atlas Copco are assessed. Projects comprise installations in food industries, pharmaceutical industries and metal and foundry industry.

CP Kelco A/S – sale of energy savings project
The Danish government’s stricter requirements covering the energy savings efforts made by energy companies has led to a greatly increased focus on large-scale energy savings projects in the commercial and industrial sector. In certain situations it is also possible for the energy companies to co-finance larger projects. We have helped CP Kelco A/S to secure a contract for this type of collaboration in connection with a forthcoming major renovation of the company's processing plant in Lille Skensved.
 
Purchasing guidelines and purchasing strategies for the Danish Electricity Saving Trust
We have helped the Trust with the drafting of its purchasing guidelines and strategies since 1999, when the first purchasing guidelines were drawn up. In 2005, VMAS was involved in revising and expanding the guidelines, so they now contain technical specifications and purchasing and operating advice for office equipment, lighting, ventilation and pumps. VMAS has compiled the technical contents of the guidelines together with the Trust, and has been responsible for framing the concept of the guidelines and the text.

The guidelines are an important tool for energy efficient purchasing by the public sector and private companies. Government institutions are obliged to use the guidelines when purchasing.
 
VMAS also assists the Trust with ad hoc consultancy within purchasing, including guidelines for the Ministry of Finance in connection with the tendering of framework contracts for purchasing, and to National Procurement Ltd - Denmark (Statens og Kommunernes Indkøbs Service).

Schering Plough – EED of New Production Facility
We have assisted Schering Plough, Ireland, in assessment of opportunities for improvement of energy efficient in a large new, pharmaceutical production unit. The project comprised estimation of future operating costs, identification of improvement projects in cooperation with QA-department, technical staff etc.. Client: Schering Plough, 2008.

Abbotts, Cootehill – Optimisation of Utility Systems
An initial screening have identified significant opportunities for improvement of refrigeration systems and heating systems at Abbotts milk processing plant in Cootehill. Our assistance have comprised identification of saving opportunities, assessment of saving potentials, priority of investment projects and plan for further investigations.

Danish Energy Agency and Danish Energy – Mapping of Energy Saving Potentials in Danish Industry.
We have in cooperation with Dansk Energi Analyse assisted The Danish Energy Agency and Danish Energy in assessment of end use consumption and energy saving potentials for all major industrial end users (Refrigeration, distillation, evaporation, drying, compressed air, electric motors and drives, boilers, HVAC, pumps, kilns etc.). The catalogue forms a platform for planning of energy audits and saving campaigns in many Danish utility companies.

The Danish Knowledge Center for Energy Savings in Buildings
We have in cooperation with The Danish Technological Institute, SBI (Building Research Institute) and Kommunikationsbureauet been awarded the contract to run the Centre for Building Energy Savings in the period 2009 – 2011. The contact comprises numerous tasks:

  • analysis of barriers towards and measures to support energy savings in buildings
  • development of standard solutions and package solutions
  • improvement of energy labelling schemes
  • training and education of all workforce involved in building construction
  • dissemination of information
  • etc.

We have assisted Sustainable Energy Ireland in the Special Working Group Initiative towards industry during 2008 and 2009 comprising:

Green Isle Foods, Portumna – Process Optimisation and Heat Recovery
Green Isle Foods operate comprehensive process plants for production of meat pies in Portumna and Viegand & Maagøe have assisted in a comprehensive assessment of improvements in the plant based on a complex integrated improvement project aiming at:

  • Increasing production capacity
  • Improving flexibility of plant operation
  • Reducing energy costs for operation
  • Utilizing waste heat for heat of hot water for cleaning purposes
  • Switch of refrigerant from Freon to ammonia

The project have resulted in a major investment project at the site in Portumna, which further forms a model for rehabilitation of other plants in the Northern Food Group. Client: Green Isle Foods, 2008 – ongoing.

Arla Foods – Utilization of Waste Heat in Milk Processing Plants
The project comprise an in-depth mapping of all heating and cooling needs in 4 complex milk processing plants so as the future utility structure and potential benefits from recovery of heat can be analysed. Special attention is paid to mapping of water consumption (process related as well as for cleaning – CIP) and recovery of waste water as these media contains significant amounts of energy.

Novozymes – Energy Savings and CDM-potentials, Hongda, China
The project comprises identification of all significant energy saving projects at Novozymes new production facility at Hongda close to Shanghai, China. Energy savings comprise immediate technical investment in energy saving projects but also significant savings are identified via improved operation of processes (training of operators) and use of KPIs and energy management routines. Further, a potential future energy supply (steam and electricity) via a biomass-fired power plant is analyzed in order to develop a CDM-project.

Sustainable Energy Ireland – Industrial Best Practice Program
During 2007 and 2008, VMAS has provided assistance to Sustainable Energy Ireland in a number of areas related to the Industrial Best Practice Program:

  • review of projects within EED in various companies
  • arrangement of HVAC-workshop in Copenhagen
  • identification of new focus areas and demonstration projects
  • etc.

The assistance has identified specialist input from various specialists and users in Denmark, by example within HVAC-systems, CIP-plants etc.

The Foreign Ministry of Denmark – Identification of CDM-projects in Cement Indusrty, Vietnam
The project assists the Danish Embassy in Hanoi, Vietnam in identification of potential for development of CDM-projects in Vietnamese cement industry. Initially, feasible CDM-methods are identified and compared to the technology used in Vietnamese cement sector. From that and via analysis of barriers towards CDM-project development, recommendations are given on which methods and technologies to give priority and a market study is prepared. The project forms basis for Danish clients purchase of CERs in Vietnam.

The Danish Energy Agency – Utilization of Waste Heat in Industry
Identification of possibilities to improve utilization of waste in the industrial sector – internally in companies as well as via export of waste heat to other industrial companies or to large district heating networks. The project comprises analysis of a number of case-studies, by example for the use of heat pump technology. Sustainable Energy Ireland – IS393 Technical Assessors Training Course
Development and implementation of a 2-day training course for technical assessors according to requirements in the IS393-standard on energy management. The course comprises a review of requirements in the standard as well as to the related technical guide as well as in-depth training in all technical matters related to a successful implementation of IS393: mapping of energy data, identification of saving opportunities, use of KPI’s and energy management, energy efficient design etc. The course further comprised a number of exercises addressing important examples in these areas.

IDA – Energy Audit at the “Engineering Office Building” in Copenhagen
Implementation of a detailed Energy audit at the Danish Engineering Association main office building in Copenhagen. The audit comprises mapping of energy consumption by end-users as well as identification of saving opportunities in HVAC-systems, lighting/IHC, office and computer equipment etc. The analysis involves technical specialists from a number of manufactures and specialist companies. Novozymes – Energy Audits at Production Facility at Tian Jin, China
Implementation of Energy audit at Novozymes large fermentation plant at Tian jin, China. The audit comprised mapping of energy consumption by end-users as well as identification of saving opportunities in utilitiy systems, in process plants, by energy management and KPI’s etc. Based in identified savings, training sessions for technical staff at the company is implemented and an action plan for implementation of saving projects are formulated.

Eli Lilly – Energy Efficient Design (EED) of New Facility in Kinsale, Cork
Energy efficient design (EED) of a new 300 mill. Euro facility for production of pharmaceutical products. The project comprises assessment of energy efficient solutions and Best Available Technology in a new facility in the Cork area. All saving opportunities are addressed in the basic design phase and implemented during detailed design of the new process plants, utility systems and HVAC.

Sustainable Energy Ireland – Long Term Change Study
Long Term Change Study for energy saving potential in Irish industry. The study aims to establish and overview of energy consumption in the industrial sector in Ireland as well as to identify gaps between energy efficiency in Ireland and the most energy efficient industries abroad. On this basis, recommendations are given to SEI on how to manage the agreements scheme towards energy intensive Irish industries in the future.

CP Kelco – “white certificate” for large energy saving project
Identification of the opportunity to formulate a “white certificate”-project for a large energy saving project concerning an evaporator-line at CP Kelco close to Copenhagen. The project has comprised negotiation with a number of utility companies on price for the certificate as well as preparation of the final contract. Client: CP Kelco, 2006.

ANEC/DEFRA – Evaluation of the EU-labelling Scheme for Appliances
Evaluation of the energy labelling directive regarding household appliances. The project has comprised interview with governments and consumer organisations across EU ot evaluate the current status regarding implementation of the directive as well as which barriers that have been met during implementation of the directive. On this basis, recommendations have been given on how to improve the directive.

Dansk Energi Net – Training Course for Private Housing and Commercial Sector Energy Consultants
Development and implementation of a 2-day training course for energy consultants working within the sectors of private housing and commercial buildings. The course comprised a detailed introduction to the most important energy consuming equipment and systems in these sectors as well as introduction to technologies and new energy saving solution within the use of biomass (wood chips etc.), solar heating, heat pumps, co-generation etc. Further, new standards for energy labeling and insulation was introduced.

Elsparefonden – Coaching and Training in Energy Efficiency in Ministries and Municipalities

Support to a large number of Ministries and Municipalities across Denmark in order to secure implementation of the new Danish Energy Saving Action Plan in the public sector. The assistance comprises coaching of energy managers in order to prepare energy saving action plans on building level as well as technical training on identification of saving opportunities in the most important areas.

Sustainable Energy Ireland – IS393 Technical Guide
Preparation of technical guide for how to carry out a “review of energy aspects” according to the Irish Standard IS393. The project comprises identification of core-activities to carry out in a review and formulation of a guide to be approved by Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB) as well as a working group comprising 7 agreements companies.

Biogasol – Energy Balance for 2. Generation Bioethanol Plant
Energy efficient design of a new 100 mill. Euro full-scale bioethanol process plant to be established at Statoil in Denmark in 2008. The project comprises establishment of energy balances, identification of heat recovery systems as well as conceptual design of utility systems.

Arla Foods – Energy Audits in 4 Ingredients Plants

Novo Nordisk – Solar Heating for Domestic Water Supply
Assessment of opportunities for integration of solar heating in the utility systems at 2 factories at Novo Nordisk in Hillerød. The project comprised a detailed mapping of consumption of domestic water in the factories and analysis of ways to integrate solar panels in the heating system.

Dansk Energi Net – Training Course on Energy Efficient design (EED)
Development and implementation of a 1-day training course for energy consultants working within the industrial sector across Denmark. The course comprised a detailed introduction to the most important energy consuming equipment and systems in the industrial sector as well and introduction to the most important work methodologies necessary to use when addressing energy efficiency in a new facility.

Novo Nordisk – Energy Screenings in 8 factories
Audit of 8 factories at the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk in Denmark to assess future energy saving projects and develop short- and longterm energy saving action plan for the site management. The project comprises management of a 15-person task-force including staff from the factory and specialists from the consulting engineering company NNE AS.

Arla Foods – Climate Change Strategy
Proposal for overall structure and key elements in a future Climate Change Strategy for companies in Arla Foods in Scandinavia, the UK and USA.
